Lastlight Recorder

Device Classification

Device Type: Collapse Documentation Device Primary Users: Reality Investigation Division Operational Authority: ALR Initiative

Development

The Lastlight Recorder, commonly referred to as Lastlight, is a specialized device used during reality investigations to document the final observable state of a collapsing world. The device captures environmental, structural, and temporal data during the final stages of a reality’s existence, shortly before it becomes part of The Unwritten.

The device was developed after early investigations revealed that the final moments of collapsing realities often contain valuable information about the mechanisms responsible for their failure. Before its introduction, many collapse events occurred without reliable documentation, leaving large gaps in the Initiative’s understanding of how realities collapse. Lastlight was created to ensure that the final observable conditions of a collapsing reality could be recorded and preserved for future analysis.

Function

The Lastlight Recorder is designed to document the final conditions of a collapsing reality. Primary functions include:

  • recording environmental conditions during collapse
  • capturing spatial and structural distortions
  • documenting the progression of collapse events
  • preserving observational records submitted by field investigators

The information gathered by the device contributes to collapse analysis and assists in assigning classifications under the Reality Collapse Classification (RCC) system.

Operation

When activated, the Lastlight Recorder continuously records environmental and structural data from the surrounding area. The device remains active until the collapse event reaches its final stage or until the environment becomes too unstable for further recording.

Lastlight prioritizes capturing the final stable state observed before the reality fully transitions into The Unwritten. Once recovered, the recorded data is transferred to The Archive and incorporated into official investigation records.

Notes

The Lastlight Recorder differs from other investigation devices in that it is designed specifically to document the final state of a collapsing reality, rather than to locate or analyze anomalies. Because of this role, the device is typically deployed only when a collapse event has already been identified.

Recordings captured by Lastlight are considered among the most valuable records preserved by the ALR Initiative, as they often represent the final evidence that a reality ever existed.
